On Mediterranean beaches, the latest skimpy, stringy fashion trend is a lace bracelet.

The inexpensive trinket has saved the small Italian cashmere firm that made it from oblivion and become a symbol of made-in-Italy pride. Now Cruciani, the company behind the bracelets, is trying to make the bracelet more than a summer fling, setting its sights on shores from Palm Beach to Turkey.

Cruciani, which once relied on sales of grandmotherly twin sets and cashmere knitwear, has sold about 11 million of the macramé bracelets since it introduced them two years ago. The company's own sales have more than doubled to $38 million in the fiscal year ended in 2013 from $18.9 million two years earlier.

New colors and designs—including a butterfly, a Mickey Mouse face and a high-end limited edition adorned with diamonds—are introduced almost every two months. The bracelet has been spotted on the wrists of a range of celebrities, such as model Heidi Klum, and is worn well beyond the beach. Men have also succumbed to the trend.

As Cruciani seeks to expand, with a target of opening 400 new points of sale around the world by 2015, Chief Executive Luca Caprai wants to roll the bracelet's success into sales of other products, such as bags and scarves. Cruciani now has 22 boutiques and 20 points of sale around the world. "People now step in for the bracelets but also end up buying something else," says Mr. Caprai.

Cruciani recently expanded into the U.S., starting with a corner in Barneys New York last February. It then opened a boutique in Palm Beach and plans one in Miami. Cruciani also plans to open stores in Beirut, Germany, France and Turkey.

But despite Cruciani's experience making knitwear and handbags, it is now known primarily for the bracelet, making it one of many one-hit wonders in the fashion world. Companies such as Crocs, Ugg and Toy Watch have faced challenges moving beyond their signature top-sellers.
